Some people think a metal roof is for barns, but they haven't seen the beautiful metal roofs that add a striking finish to a home with color and design. And who could deny the sweet sound of the pitter patter of rain drops on a tin roof during a summer shower? This type of roof is very durable and water proof, providing they are given the proper care. The problem is, once the paint or top coating is compromised the roof gets rusty and develops ugly holes.
Keeping a metal roof clean is a good step toward preserving it and preventing roof repair. It's really important to do this if you live in location where you roof tend to attract mold and mildew. The paint will hold longer without peeling and you house will just look better.
The amount of elbow grease you need to put into cleaning your roof depends on its current condition. If it has already begun to corrode in places there will be more effort involved. You'll need a wire brush to scrape off the rust. You can use a flat putty knife in tough spots, but take care not to gouge or scratch the surface.
Where there is a lot of dirt and mildew, you'll need to wash it down with a mild TriSodium Phosphate (TSP) solution. Mix a half cup per gallon of water. Rinse the areas you've cleaned with water and allow to dry. You'll be able to see if you need to go back over any sections. To do a really good job, rinse the entire metal roof with a power washer. Always use the best safety practices when working on a wet roof.
