A fascia panel is the final piece that gets installed after your roof goes on. Your roof has rafters. Those rafters create a space between the top of the wall and the roof big enough for critters of all sizes, birds, wind and any manner of activity to get into your house. The fascia acts as a barrier between you and the outer world. Rather than heating and cooling the rest of the world, you keep your temperature to yourself. And, you keep the moisture out.

Fascia has traditionally been made of wood but vinyl has become much more popular in humid areas because it lasts longer. Wood, when exposed to moisture can rot. Also, when it gets wet and then dries out a number of times, it can also warp which means that it is no longer as effective for its purpose and may even pull away from the rafters. Roofers will tell you that this barrier can mean the difference between your roof lasting a long time and a premature roof replacement.

To install them effectively, you need to measure the space and then cut the board to fit the space. They are not all going to be equal in size so cut each one separately so that you don’t waste any wood. Start at one end and then go all the way around. That way you know that you have completed the whole house. Also, it is easier to treat them with paint or wood preservative before you get up on the ladder to install them. Use a good product for either the wood or the vinyl. Cheap paint will peel and the fascia panel will not look good at all.

If you don't ask for vinyl fascia then your asking to have your fascia replaced in years to come. This stuff will outlast wood ten fold. I would highly recommend, the only time you have to maintain it is when you want to paint your house a different color.

I agree with the commenter above...Go with Vinyl Fascia...the pros far outweigh the cons.

I've been using flat stock to fabricate custom fascia for a while and vinyl fascia cracks over time, especially when you install gutters right against it. Aluminum fascia is my preference.
