Can I put vinyl siding over wood siding?

This home owner has brick and wood siding on his house, but does not want to bother with painting the wood anymore. Vinyl siding can go over just about any other type of material, but it must be in stable condition. If the wood has deteriorated, then the vinyl installation is weakened. It's not a good idea to have rotting wood anywhere on your home.
