Seasonal roof cleaningDoing regular roof cleaning helps to maintain the structural part of your home that provides its primary protection. When your roof in not in good shape, the rest of the house suffers. A good spring cleaning will extend the life of your roof and help you avoid unnecessary roof repair.

The most important thing about cleaning the roof, is getting rid of debris and organic material that hold water. It does not really affect the open slopes, unless of course you have a lot of trees nearby that shed their leaves. It is usually a problem in the roof valleys, seams, crevices and penetrations. Before you climb up on your roof take all the necessary precautions to ensure your safety.

Take a look in the gutters for packed bunches of leaves and twigs. You can remove it with a pair of rubber gloves and a bucket. Flush the gutters out well with a garden hose to clear away sediment. Pay close attention to the downspouts.

Check around roof penetrations such as skylights, roof vents, vent pipes and chimneys. The places on the roof where holes have been cut are especially vulnerable to leaks, so keep them clear of rotting debris that can cause the roofing materials and roofing compound to deteriorate.

In the areas of the roof where there are trees nearby, check for piles of twigs and leaves. These can gather in the roof valleys and damage the roof flashing. Overhanging branches encourage excess humidity on the roof which leads to a leaky roof. These roof cleaning tips will keep your roof in good condition.
