Emergency Roof Repair Tips

emergency roof repair tipsHopefully you will never have to wait long for a roof repair company to show up at your house after reporting a leak, but sometimes it happens. With so much storm activity happening in parts of the country contractors are apt to have their hands full when the rain is pounding down in full force. In this case there are temporary measures you can take until help arrives.

You have to be very careful working on a wet roof - it can be treacherous. Shoes and ladders can easily slip in the rain. You'll need a tarp big enough to cover the hole and possibly to reach over the roof ridge. You will also need some wood 1" x 2" battens, some common eight penny nails and a hammer. You can use a framing gun if you have one. Try not to tarp any more than you need to in view of the fact the shingles with all the new nail holes will need to be replaced.

You can attach the tarp one of two ways to prevent the rain from getting underneath it from the top. Counter flash it by tucking the top edge of the tarp under a row of shingles or pull it over the ridge and secure in place with battens and nails. Run the battens very 4 ft. vertically across the width of the tarp. Avoid running the battens horizontally and keep them at least a foot from the roof valleys. This emergency roof repair will keep you dry until a roofer can get to you.
