Choosing Roofing Materials

by Roofer911.com

choosing roof shinglesThere are many types of roofing materials to choose from when you need roof replacement. Composition shingles, wood shakes, slate, clay tiles, even metal are materials to consider for your roof. Some things to consider when choosing are the design of your house, any homeowner’s association codes, your climate, and your budget. Something that seems like a more expensive option might actually be longer lasting, therefore it will require replacement less often. If you don’t plan on living in the house for the rest of your life, it can even add to the resale value of your home.

Composition roofing is a lower priced option and in climates with extremes, it can be very durable. It comes in a variety of colors, designs, and textural options. If you’d like to keep your home cooler in a hotter climate, a light colored shingle helps. Composition shingles are the material most often used.

Cedar shakes keep heat in the house better than some other options, but may not last as long. Tile roofing might be a better option in hot climates, or where insects are a problem, or if being fireproof is a consideration. They are expensive, but durable. Another durable option is slate tiles. These come in a variety of thicknesses that last longer when thicker. Slate can delaminate so thicker is better.

Something that probably won’t need a lot of roof repair is a metal roof. This is another durable Roofing materials option that lasts through weather extremes.
