Current Options in Solar Roofs

By: Jessica Ackerman

Stereo-typical solar panels are massive in both size and weight. They cost so much that it seems as though only the next generation can enjoy the benefits of reduced energy bills. Thankfully, those stereo-types no longer hold true. There are still large solar panels, but they are much more efficient and lightweight than the behemoths of old. Today's solar roof options are vastly more efficient, easier to install and come in a larger variety of product choices.

Solar Roof Tiles

Today's solar roof tiles are light and sleek. They can weigh anywhere from two pounds to ten and are made to fit on residential roofs. The new solar panels are also inconspicuous, whereas their predecessors seemed to scream for attention. Manufacturers have also begun to craft solar roof tiles that can easily and seamlessly transition into existing roof shingles. This allows homeowners to upgrade their roofs with an eco-friendly alternative, while also keeping existing roofing material. The cost savings alone makes the new solar roof tiles a more viable option.

Roof Mounted Solar Panels

Roof mounted solar panels are more in-line with the older style of solar paneling. These panels are a bit heavier than the roof tiles and are mounted onto frames on the roof. There is nothing subtle about the look of roof mounted solar panels. The benefits to this type of panel, though, are that it can be installed relatively easily and is more energy efficient given its size. The metal frame that it sits on is lightweight, which could potentially be problematic during heavy windstorms. When discussing options with your solar roofing specialist, be sure that he or she is familiar with the climate and weather where you live.

Patio Solar Panels

Do you have a back porch or patio that needs a new roof? Consider installing a smaller version of roof mounted solar panels for energy savings and shade. One of the great benefits to solar panels is that they shade the roof from intense sunlight which generates heat. This creates a cooler home, or in this case, patio, and provides a more comfortable environment for homeowners.

Installation

Although some solar panel kits are available for handy do-it-yourself homeowners, the majority of people will be better off hiring a professional roofing contractor who specializes in solar panel or tile installation. These highly trained specialists know not only about roofing needs and materials, they are also experts on solar savings. Ask for recommendations from friends and relatives when you are searching for a contractor. Manufacturers may also recommend contractors who have been specially trained on the installation of their products. Solar panels will help reduce your need for electricity from the grid and create a comfortable home environment. Some companies claim that installing a solar panel or tile system is similar to planting 500 new trees, as the energy savings and impact on the environment is that great. If you are looking for an eco-friendly roofing option that will also help you cut energy costs, a solar roofing system can provide it.
