South Riding is located in one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, but even home with a higher than average marker value are forced to deal with the issues created by the climate. It’s true we have it easier, weather-wise than other parts of the country, but the humidity, sunshine and rain to their fair share of damage to our homes. It’s a really good reason to keep the roof in tip top condition. A few roof repairs here and there go a long way to protecting the rest of the house.

What can go wrong?

Roof damage can show in many different ways. A ferocious wind can knock a tree over on your roof. Hail stones don’t have to be large to leave dents in the shingles where they knock off the protective asphalt granules. Rain and snow put a strain on your roof as it works to draw water away from your house. These elements, in combination with the UV rays from the sun, detract from the adhesives that keep your roof waterproof. You end up with gaps and cracks in the roofing materials where water can enter. Once you have this going on, the problems continue to escalate until you intervene.

What are the signs of roof problems?

These are a just few common things that will tip you off to the fact your roof is not doing well:

  •
During a storm you notice a bubble forming in the drywall of a ceiling in your house. You poke a hole though it with a sharp tool and you have to run for buckets to catch the water pouring out.
  •
You are experiencing a cold snap and you see icicles hanging from the edge of the roof. You also see a wet patch forming on the ceiling inside the house.
  •
Your fireplace develops a puddle of water a couple hours after a rain storm. It gets worse every time it rains.
  •
You check the attic and get slammed with the overwhelming stench of a squirrel’s nest.  You’re not sure how they got in there, but you know you didn’t invite them.
  •
You also notice the attic smells like mildew, and when you shine your flashlight, you see patches of mold on the wood sheathing.
  •
The attic insulation is quite damp and your energy bill seems to be higher than usual. (Wet insulation loses R-value.)
  •
You notice a lot of leaves piled up in your gutters. At the same time you see wet stains around a couple of windows inside the house.

Check Your Gutters

A very common source of water damage starts with gutters that are not draining correctly. Visually inspect for leaves and debris, since these can eventually build up and clog your gutters and downspouts. Standing water in the gutters damages your roof and fascia, causing it to rot. Overflowing gutters dump water next your home’s foundation, where it leaks into the basement. The gutters are part of the drainage system that takes gallons of water cascading down the roof away from the house. When the gutters are installed at a bad angle, are broken or blocked, all that water has nowhere to go.

Can I prevent roof damage?

You can’t stop the effects of the weather on your roof, but you can do a lot to maintain your roof so it doesn’t get worse. You simply need to be a proactive South Riding home owner and have your roof regularly inspected. Roof repairs will help it last much longer and save you the expense of a complete roof replacement. It will also help to keep your energy costs down, while protecting the rest of the house.

roof repair, infrared

I want to thank Steve and the workers at Roofer911. I called them a month ago in June 2013 to repair a leak in our main ridge vent. He came right away and they fixed it the next day. The repair has held through a month of heavy rain this summer. That said, due to the heavy rain we soon discovered another leak in a different ridge vent. I called Steve and he came the next day. He had his guys come the same day and fix the problem. I am confident the problem is fixed, but I know Steve stands by his work if any issues arise. Scott B., South Riding, VA
