Considering Copper Shingle Roof Options

By: Alyssa Davis

Copper Shingle Installation

Much like their fiberglass counterparts, most copper shingles are manufactured in such a way that they can be installed by any certified roofing contractor. They have the same basic installation process, and are just about as easy to work with. With sharper edges, however, there is a greater chance for injury on the job, so be sure to only hire contractors and roofing companies who are licensed and bonded with their own insurance.

Benefits of Copper

One of the benefits of copper roofing material is that it typically lasts for about 50 years. Although more expensive than a 25-year guaranteed fiberglass roof, it does, normally, have twice the life. Another benefit of copper roofing is the aesthetics of the material. There is nothing more elegant than a copper roofed home. It is a sign of sophistication and class. If your home can handle such a high visibility roof, there is no reason why copper would not be a viable choice.

Patinas

There is no roofing material that ages so beautifully as does copper. Naturally occurring verdigris is the name of the process where the brilliant copper color transforms into a brilliant patina. This natural process actually helps protect the copper which makes it last for many years to come. Many old buildings, especially in the Northeastern part of the United States and Canada have old copper roofs that have mellowed into striking green patinas. The transformation is just as beautiful and adds a whole new dimension to the building's appearance.

Recycling

When asphalt roofing shingles are removed, while they can be recycled for eco-conscious reasons, there is little cash value in doing so. That is a far cry from the reality of old copper roofs. Because of their high cash value, when a copper roof is replaced, the old roofing material can be salvaged for a significant amount of cash back. The old copper shingles are melted down and re-used to make new shingles or other copper materials. It is an added benefit to installing a copper roof and one that guarantees that the value of the home will survive. Copper roofs are definitely more costly than packs of shingles, but their superior protection and life span compensate for the price difference. If you are planning to remain in your home for the rest of your lifetime, and your house can handle the look of copper shingles, installing them is a great choice. It may be the last roof replacement that you will ever need to do. Choose a contractor who has installed copper shingles before and get references to ensure that you get the best results. For the cost of the copper shingle installation, you want to make sure that the job is done right.
