Mildew removal does not have to be a difficult thing. In fact, the best means of offense is by having a good defense - don't get it in the first place. One of the first steps you want to take in removing the mold, mildew and rot in your home is having a roof repair guy that you really trust come in and give your entire roof an inspection. That means inside and out.
It is all very well and good for a roofing contractor to look at a dip in your roof and tell you that you have mold, mildew and dry rot eating away at the substructure of your roof, hence, you need a new one - roof. But what if all that happened was that the next door neighbor bounced his elm tree branch off your gable and broke a truss? I think that you would really rather repair a roof truss and than do a complete roof replacement job.
So hire the contractor that goes up in your attic and, when he sees streamers of pink and orange mold and mildew swaying in the breeze from the hole in the roof, and gives you a simple solution - get that toxic stuff out of here! Today, there are options other than scraping and using bleach or muriatic acid, which is quite nasty stuff and can really harm your lungs, eyes and skin. Your roofer will know which natural compound to use that will actually remove the growth without harming the wood. If you are faced with the serious black mold variety, burning the wood is the most effective and easy mildew removal.
