Most homeowner’s are very frugal with their dollars; after all, you’ve worked hard for your money- why not be?  But if you’re looking for someone to install roof shingles on your home and you think that price is the only driving force- be careful or you will get burned quickly!  Price is important, but just like that old saying goes, “If it sounds too good to be true; than it’s probably is.”

I’m sure many people have heard of these gypsy roofing crews coming into tornado torn areas and giving homeowner’s these outrageously low roofing bids to install roof shingles, then taking their money and running.  Most people know that they need to steer clear of these renegades and they do.  But believe it or not; even the little guy down the street- whom may have the best of intentions, who really needs the cash- may steer you in the wrong direction, as well.  Maybe not intentionally, but unless you hire a professional to install roof shingles; you’re taking a big chance with money.

Finding a professional company to install roof shingles is not a total pain for homeowner’s to do.  Generally, if your city has some type of licensing board or building inspector; they can probably point you in the right direction.  Most cities require that all roofers be at least licensed as a business.  Some cities require more licenses, as well as, liability insurance to cover unsuspecting homeowner’s.  State licensing boards usually have websites available and phone numbers that can also assist you in validating a roofer’s license.

Other important documents that all homeowner’s need to require their roofers to have when they install roof shingles is experience; not just for the supervisor, but all the men or women whom will be atop your roof.  Ask questions regarding the workers and crew that will be at your home.  Inquire about their hiring practices and the minimal experience that these workers must have.  You may find that just because a licensed company looks good on paper; the actual worker’s do not.  As well, ask questions about the length of the job, the times the workers will be at your home working; and even ask questions regarding unplanned weather events.  If a rain storm comes in at 10pm; you don’t need your home exposed- make sure the roofing company has a plan of action for unforeseen events.

Roofing companies should be able to supply homeowner’s with references and samples of their work.  They should be able to point you to other

homeowner’s that will answer any questions you may have.  Most roofer’s use a certain brand of shingle when they roof a homeowner’s house.  You will need to inquire about the manufacturer’s warranty, as well as, their experience working with the company.  Do some research on the Internet and find out if this type of shingle is what you’re looking for on your roof.

Homeowner’s should always ask for any verbal reached agreements and warranties on workmanship to be written into the contract.  This contract needs to be signed by both parties involved and a copy should be given to you.  Be sure to read the small print, ask any questions, and never sign the agreement unless you are sure you can live with the terms and conditions.  Put the contract in a safe place and keep it there for reference.  Even the best crews and roofing companies can sometimes make a mistake; having your agreement to pull out and reference will ensure that you and your family stay warm and dry.
