When it comes time to repair or replace your roof, it can be a daunting task to find someone who is qualified to do the job.  There are many roofing companies out there, but the ones who will do a great job for a reasonable price are not often easy to find.  If you are in the market for a contractor, use the tips below for interviewing and hiring the right one.

Interview and Consultation
Most roofing companies offer free consultations.  This is especially important, because it gives them a chance to evaluate what your roof needs, and it gives you a chance to evaluate them.  As with all businesses, trust your instincts about the people you let up onto your roof.  No matter how good a contractor's reputation or recommendation, he should start by presenting you with a business card.  If a contractor arrives looking and talking in an unprofessional manner, chances are that the job he is going to do will also be unprofessional.  This is not to say that you should expect contractors to arrive in suits.  They will be climbing on your roof, so most will be dressed in jeans and work boots or sneakers.  If the contractor seems to be more interested in talking on his cell phone while on your roof than he is in evaluating your roof's needs, that may be another sign that he is not the one for the job. For your legal protection, be certain that the contractor has adequate liability insurance.

Roof Evaluation
Expect that the contractor will be going up on your roof.  In fact, any contractor who does not want to go up on your roof to evaluate the problem should be immediately discounted.  Those who are serious about their work will either make a drawing of your roof's surface and mark problem areas on it as they go through their evaluation, or they will take pictures or video of the surface while they are up there.  This is a very important step, because it allows you to see exactly what the problems are and understand how they will be fixed.

Estimate
The next step will be the written estimate.  The contractor will take out his calculator and come up with a written estimate.  Some contractors will go out to their truck or van and write up the proposal, while others will crunch the numbers for the job in front of you.  Once you are given the proposal, make sure that you understand exactly which products will be used, how long the job will take and if there are any additional or hidden costs that may arise during the repair of the roof.  The contractor should be able to answer all of these questions with ease and forewarn you of any additional expenses that might be incurred should the roof's integrity be damaged inside.
